Lipoedema

IS IT LIPOEDEMA, LYMPHEDEMA or CELLULITE

LIPOEDEMA

Lipoedema is a long-term (chronic) condition where there’s an abnormal build-up of fat cells in the legs, thighs and buttocks, and sometimes in the arms. The condition usually only affects women.

Lipoedema happens when fat is distributed in an irregular way beneath your skin, usually in the buttocks and legs. Although it begins as a cosmetic concern, it can eventually cause pain and other problems. It is a painful fat disorder that, if untreated, can cause multiple health problems leading to mobility issues. Lipoedema is a disorder of adipose tissue that occurs almost exclusively in women; it has also been called ‘painful fat syndrome’. Lipedema can be mistaken for regular obesity or lymphedema.

The cause of lipoedema is not known, but there is a family history of the condition in up to 50% of cases. The fact that it starts in puberty or pregnancy suggests that hormones have an influence.

In rare cases of lipoedema in men, the men have usually been taking hormone therapy or have cirrhosis of the liver.

LYMPHEDEMA

Lymphedema occurs as a result of something else, such as an infection, injury, trauma, or cancer that affects the lymphatic system. Lymphedema may be a side effect of cancer treatment, such as radiation therapy or the removal of some lymph nodes, which can damage the lymphatic system.

Lymphedema is a condition that results from impaired flow of the lymphatic system. Breast cancer treatment is the most common cause of lymphedema.

Treatment for lymphedema depends on its cause and includes wearing compression garments such as stockings or sleeves, proper diet and skin care, and fluid drainage. Elevating an arm or leg that has swelling can help ease the drainage of lymph fluid from the affected limb.

CELLULITE

Cellulite is a condition in which the skin has a dimpled, lumpy appearance. It usually affects the buttocks and thighs but can also occur in other areas.

Cellulite occurs when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin.

The exact cause of cellulite is unknown, but it appears to result from an interaction between the connective tissue in the dermatological layer that lies below the surface of the skin, and the layer of fat that is just below it.
